Window blinds present a serious threat to little children. It has recently been discussed that window blinds are a products liability due to the fact that they present a hazard for strangulation. Although standards are in place to protect against the hazard of window blinds they are effective enough.

The Chicago Tribune recently reported that the U.S., Canada, and Europe are asking that window blinds companies provide safety standards that would put an end to the risks of strangulation hazard. There is a fear that if proposed changes go through there will be more children who will be killed by window blinds.

These proposals would mean that the window blind manufacturers would still be allowed to use cords. The cords are a big danger for children who may wrap them around their necks.

Some wonder why the window blinds manufacturers and designers don’t re-design their product with small children in mind. It has been reported that one child loses their life to strangulation from window blinds every month. This terrible statistic has been true for two decades. So why wouldn’t window blinds companies change the way they do things on their own without being forced into it?

While window blinds are a product for the use in the home and not related to small children directly, some products liabilities are actually marketed for children’s use. Drop side cribs and crib bumpers are two examples of dangers products for babies and children. Crib bumpers have been responsible for suffocating at least 28 children in the last 20 years.

Over 2 million drop cribs were recalled last year because they had caused babies to suffocate, fall or get stuck. It is especially upsetting that a products liability can mean that a child isn’t even safe in their own bed.

Keep track of recalls that are reported through out the year and stop using any product that has been recalled until it is replaced or fixed. Paying attention to any possible product liability will help ensure that your babies and children stay safe at home.
